David Leichtman

David Leichtman

After 20 years of practicing in large law firms, in April 2017 David Leichtman launched a new law firm, Leichtman Law PLLC, a New York-based boutique focusing on trial work on business and intellectual property matters.

Previously a partner at Robins Kaplan, Lovells and Morgan Lewis, Mr. Leichtman will now head a team of former colleagues and friends who have also left bigger law firms.

Leichtman Law will handle international and domestic business and intellectual property litigation of all types, including in the media & entertainment, financial services, and life sciences industries, among others.

“After twenty years working in large firms, I am directing my energies into a more nimble practice,” said Mr. Leichtman. “As a trial lawyer, I have always been focused on my clients’ business goals, and I am excited by the growth potential of a business model which creates opportunities for our clients to resolve disputes more efficiently than can be done at larger firms.”

Leichtman Law is built on the premise that clients have the right to an honest and transparent evaluation of their cases, whether they are the plaintiff or the defendant. That evaluation includes an assessment of the value that can come from legal action.  It is imperative to prepare a theme for trial from the start.  A trial theme also needs to serve the goals of the client’s business, so that it drives the dispute towards a productive solution from the get-go, and at all times during the course of a matter.

The philosophy also centers around a belief that clients deserve budget certainty.  That means having matters handled efficiently and in proportion to what is at stake. Leichtman Law takes pride in holding to its budget agreements, and working out alternative fee and payment arrangements that make sense for its clients’ business as well as the firm, bringing predictability to a client’s legal spend.  By staffing cases appropriately with a seasoned partner and talented attorneys who make the clients’ business interests their priority.

Mr. Leichtman is joined by experienced commercial and IP litigators Richard A. Mescon, Matthew McFarlane and Tatsuya Adachi (all formerly of Robins Kaplan), David H. Brill (former General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Gemini Trust Company) and Shevani Jaisingh (formerly of Sullivan & Cromwell and Greenberg Traurig).  Leichtman Law plans to grow to at least 25 lawyers. “During the last seven years I helped build Robins Kaplan’s New York office from three to forty lawyers, and I am confident we can grow our new shop as well,” said Mr. Leichtman.

Mr. Leichtman serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors for Volunteer Lawyers For The Arts; on the IPO Committee on Copyright Practice; and on the NYIPLA Committees on Patent Litigation and Inventor of the Year. He has been named a New York SuperLawyer every year since 2010.  In 2016, The New York Law Journal selected him as a Lawyer Who Leads by Example for providing crucial pro bono legal services in New York. He is also a fellow, Litigation Counsel of America, a highly selective Trial Lawyer Honor Society, where he is also a founding member of its Intellectual Property Institute.
